Drywalling in Blair
Drywall in Blair, the heritage village on the west bank of the Grand, and the newer homes around it.
Blair is one of Cambridge's three Heritage Conservation Districts, designated in 2002 to keep its village character, and the old houses along Blair Road and the side lanes are plaster through and through. The work is careful: repair where the plaster is sound, overlay where it has failed, trim labelled and put back, and the City's heritage staff consulted before anything at a window reveal or a casing changes, since those are the parts of the house a district protects. Additions to these houses are common and the joint between old brick and new framing is detailed to move rather than finished across as one wall. The newer homes on the village's edges and down toward the river are ordinary basement and finishing work, with the Grand River Conservation Authority's mapping worth a look for anyone planning to change the building itself on a lot near the water.

Frequently asked questions
Is the price different in Galt than in the newer parts of Cambridge?
Not because of the address. The old houses carry more unknowns — plaster, out-of-plane framing, trim to save, a test first — and the new basements carry bulkheads and drops. The quotes differ for reasons that would be true anywhere, and both get the same site visit.
Do you work on heritage-designated houses?
Yes. Drywall is interior and heritage controls mainly concern the street-facing exterior, but a designated house or one inside a district should check with the City's heritage staff before window reveals or casings are altered. Our approach — keep the trim, put it back — is the same either way.
Do the rules change in Ayr or North Dumfries?
The Building Code is provincial, but North Dumfries Township runs its own permits and zoning and is not covered by Cambridge's pages. A property there is checked against the township's rules before anything is quoted.
