Drywalling in Galt

Drywall across Galt, from the stone and brick houses of West Galt and Dickson Hill to the post-war streets of East Galt and the subdivisions beyond Franklin.

Galt has the richest stock of pre-1920 houses in the region and the drywall work follows: plaster that has lost its keys, ceilings sagging at the centre of the room, and owners who want a flat wall without losing the deep baseboards and casings. Repair, overlay or strip is decided wall by wall, and any later compound or texture is tested for asbestos before it is disturbed. West Galt, Dickson Hill and the Main Street core carry heritage designations and districts, and while drywall is interior work, window reveals and casings are worth a word with the City's heritage staff before they are altered. The low streets along the Grand have a long history with water, and flood repair here is done properly — board cut above the water line, cavity dried and checked, re-boarded after the basement is truly dry. East of the river the post-war and 1970s streets bring stipple ceilings and tired first-finish basements, and the subdivisions off Franklin and Can-Amera the ordinary new-basement work.

Frequently asked questions

Is the price different in Galt than in the newer parts of Cambridge?

Not because of the address. The old houses carry more unknowns — plaster, out-of-plane framing, trim to save, a test first — and the new basements carry bulkheads and drops. The quotes differ for reasons that would be true anywhere, and both get the same site visit.

Do you work on heritage-designated houses?

Yes. Drywall is interior and heritage controls mainly concern the street-facing exterior, but a designated house or one inside a district should check with the City's heritage staff before window reveals or casings are altered. Our approach — keep the trim, put it back — is the same either way.

Do the rules change in Ayr or North Dumfries?

The Building Code is provincial, but North Dumfries Township runs its own permits and zoning and is not covered by Cambridge's pages. A property there is checked against the township's rules before anything is quoted.
